The Phylogeny Of Life

Biosphere : Life On Earth : " Life! It's everywhere on Earth; you can find living organisms from the poles to the equator, from the bottom of the sea to several miles in the air, from freezing waters to dry valleys to undersea thermal vents to groundwater thousands of feet below the Earth's surface. Over the last 3.7 billion years or so, living organisms on the Earth have diversified and adapted to almost every environment imaginable. The diversity of life is truly amazing, but all living organisms do share certain similarities. All living organisms can replicate, and the replicator molecule is DNA. As well, all living organisms contain some means of converting the information stored in DNA into products used to build cellular machinery from fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. "

Professor James Ephraim Lovelock
  • "James Lovelock, independent scientist, environmentalist, author and researcher, Doctor Honoris Causa of several universities throughout the world, he is considered since several decades as a one of the main ideological leaders, if not the main one, in the history of the development of environmental awareness.

  •

Professor Lovelock is still, today, one of the main authors in the environmental field; and,
  • He is the author of " The GaiaTheory ", and " The Ages of Gaia ", which consider the planet Earth as a self-regulated living being, as well as, more recently his "Homage to GAIA", an autobiography published in September 2000.", per www.ecolo.org. see also: WikiVerse : http://james-lovelock.wikiverse.org/

PFEL Climate & Marine Fisheries

"Some climate scientists like to say "Climate is what you expect; weather is what you get". Weather is the day-to-day state of the atmosphere, based on quantifiable factors such as temperature, precipitation, atmospheric pressure, wind, sunshine, and cloud cover. Climate describes the long-term character of all weather variations, --the ‘expected’ weather--, usually over a period of several years. The usual reference period is recent, when observations are more readily available and accurate"

METHANE

METHANE : http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc_tar/wg1/017.htm

Atmospheric methane (CH4) concentrations have increased by about 150% (1,060 ppb) since 1750. The present CH4 concentration has not been exceeded during the past 420,000 years. "

IVG e. V.    http://www.grubengas.de/faq.htm

Is the amount of methane in the atmosphere increasing? ... Yes, but recent studies indicate that atmospheric methane concentrations may be reaching a steady state in the next 10 to 20 years if present trends continue (Dlugokencky et al., 1998). Earlier studies have shown that since 1800, atmospheric concentrations of methane have increased by 145 percent. Increases in the concentration of methane in the atmosphere roughly parallel world population growth. This rapid increase in methane concentrations also is confirmed by analyses of infrared solar spectra, which show that methane concentrations have increased by over 30 percent since 1951. Growth in methane concentrations began a slowing trend in 1992. Since 1993, methane's global growth rate has been between 2 and 8 ppbv/year. This is much slower than the 20 ppbv/year in the late 1970s and slightly less than the 9 to 13 ppbv/year during the 1980s. From 1994 to 1996, global methane concentrations have been estimated at 1,721, 1,728, and 1,730 ppbv/year, respectively. (For more on this, see this site's Topic in Brief on Methane in the Atmosphere.)  "

ITER

ITER website states "

ITER is the experimental step between today’s studies of plasma physics and tomorrow's electricity-producing fusion power plants.

It is based around a hydrogen plasma torus operating at over 100 million °C, and will produce 500 MW of fusion power.

It is an international project involving The People's Republic of China, the European Union and Switzerland (represented by Euratom), India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States of America, under the auspices of the IAEA.

It is technically ready to start construction and the first plasma operation is expected in 2016."

WRI Digest

The World Resuorces Institute

"World Resources Institute (WRI) is an environmental think tank that goes beyond research to find practical ways to protect the earth and improve people's lives.

Our mission is to move human society to live in ways that protect Earth's environment and its capacity to provide for the needs and aspirations of current and future generations.

Because people are inspired by ideas, empowered by knowledge, and moved to change by greater understanding, WRI provides—and helps other institutions provide—objective information and practical proposals for policy and institutional change that will foster environmentally sound, socially equitable development.

WRI organizes its work around four key goals:

  • People & Ecosystems: Reverse rapid degradation of ecosystems and assure their capacity to provide humans with needed goods and services.
  • Access: Guarantee public access to information and decisions regarding natural resources and the environment.
  • Climate Protection: Protect the global climate system from further harm due to emissions of greenhouse gases and help humanity and the natural world adapt to unavoidable climate change.
  • Markets & Enterprise: Harness markets and enterprise to expand economic opportunity and protect the environment.
